North Garland County Regional Water District

Minimum Standards for Service Connections

The Water District has been informed by the Arkansas Department of Health that
all connections to a public water system must meet certain minimum standards and
that it is the responsibility of the Water District to see that these standards are met.

Some of these regulations are to protect the integrity of the water system and
others are for the personal protection of you, the water user. Therefore, it is the
responsibility of the employees of our water district to inspect your connections
to the water system and note any corrections that must be made to be in
compliance with State Health Department regulations and Water District policies.

Listed below are the standards that must be in compliance:

1 Any existing wells must be disconnected from the residence or building.
An outside hydrant can be connected to the well, but no water lines from the
well can be connected to the residence or building.

2 A shut-off valve between the meter and the regulator.

3 A water pressure regulator installed between the meter and your house.

4 An accessible housing for items 2 & 3.

5 There can be no cross connection between the public water system and
your previous supply system.

6 All piping used to make the connection must at least 200 psi in either roll
tubing or Schedule 40 PVC. No hose clamps or galvanized piping permitted
underground.

7 ¾” pipe shall be the minimum size allowed for connecting to the water
system. All connections must be either brass or pvc.

8 All piping must be installed at a depth of at least 12 inches.

9 Water heaters shall have a T&P valve and gas water heaters shall be properly
vented through the roof.

10 Commercial connections must be done by a licensed plumber. Call the State
Health Department for Details at 624-1159.

11 A homeowner may make their own connection to the meter box, but if they
hires someone to make the connection, they must be a licensed plumber.

12 A licensed inspector must inspect all connections. Call the Water District
office at 620-4118 for details.

13 Any free standing outside hydrant installed on a water line, either frost free or
underground in a vault, must have a double check valve assembly installed. Wall
hydrants must be equipped with an approved vacuum breaker.

14 In no case shall electrical lines, television cable lines, telephone lines or gas lines
be installed in the same trench or encasement with water mains.

15 All new construction shall have a thermal expansion tank or a combination ball
and relief valve.

The above items must be accomplished prior to installing a meter and turning on
your water. If you have questions or need help in determining what to do, the
District’s employees will gladly assist you.
